A new chapter in the transition from NemID to MitID

eID

As of the 31st of October (2022), there has been a change in the way you can sign up for the new Danish eID, MitID. Whereas before you could get it via your bank, now you have the option of doing so at MitID.dk, by scanning your passport in the MitID app or by visiting Borgerservice.

There are already over 4.7 million registered users of MitID and considering that it is now no longer possible to use NemID, the eID MitID is replacing, to verify your identity at banks, we can expect that number to continue growing.

This 31st of October deadline is a result of a slight delay as the original deadline was June 30th, however Borgerservice encouraged postponing this to continue their efforts, along with banks and MitID, to get as many users migrated from NemID to MitID as possible.

Although banks no longer support the use of NemID, you can still use it for all public, and some private, self-service solutions but this will be phased out, eventually shutting NemID down fully on the 30th of June 2023.

While there is no requirement that all Danish citizens must have MitID, just as there was no requirement for NemID, we’ve certainly seen a marked increase in MitID use cases over the past couple months and expect this trend to continue. So if you haven’t done so already, go to mitid.dk, use their app or visit Borgerservice to get started with MitID.
