From the 1st of August this year, telecommunications providers in Sweden are required to verify the identity of anyone who already has or is looking to obtain a prepaid SIM card. While this may not cause any big changes or challenges when onboarding Swedish customers, seeing as the majority of these will have access to BankID already, it may cause complications when onboarding foreign nationals and tourists.
People without a Swedish personal number and BankID, can still bring identification documents to phone stores and, in some cases, stores like Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven. However, if telecommunications providers want to not only maintain a consistent and simple experience across channels, but ensure compliance and security, they need to broaden their tech stack.
This is where independent eIDs like Onfido or Swisscom can help. Offering customers an additional way to authenticate from wherever they are, not only streamlines your process but does so in a secure and effective way, spotting fraudulent identification attempts at a much higher rate than an untrained employee ever will.
With identity fraud becoming a bigger problem and more difficult to catch every year, platforms built for this purpose have become more valuable than ever. Falsified documents, synthetic identity fraud etc require more sophisticated fraud detection methods.
Seeing as the new legislation is meant to hinder the use of “burner phones” within organised crime, the responsibility of telecommunications providers is a large one and they need all the help they can get.
As a partner in digitalisation to a number of regulated industries, Scrive is able to guide you to the right solution to solve the complicated issues that can arise with changes in laws and regulations.
