Technology trends transforming car rental

From enhanced reservation systems to smarter vehicles and contactless transactions, the car rental experience has evolved to meet the demands of modern travellers.

Seeing as Scrive has spent over a decade working with rental companies around the world, we wanted to explore some of the key technology trends that have reshaped the industry in recent years.

Digital booking

Visiting a car rental agency or calling to make a reservation is already a thing of the past. Across Europe, it’s typically more convenient to book your rental online or through a mobile app. These platforms allow customers to browse available vehicles, compare prices and complete the reservation process in just a few clicks. As seen in other industries, this digitalisation trend definitely saw an increase in popularity during and after the Covid 19 pandemic.

Data analytics for personalisation

By analysing customer data, businesses can personalise their offerings, recommend suitable vehicles, and tailor promotional offers. This data-driven approach allows companies to create a more engaging and personalised experience for each renter.

Smart cars and connected vehicles

Years ago you may remember having to pay extra at a rental company to get a separate GPS device to navigate but now many rental companies offer vehicles already equipped with features such as GPS navigation as well as keyless entry, and smartphone integration.

These features not only make it easier for customers to make the most of their rental experience but connected vehicles can provide real-time data to rental companies, allowing them to monitor vehicle health and safety.

Enhanced customer support

Chatbots and AI-powered customer service tools can quickly address common inquiries and issues, providing renters with instant assistance. Furthermore, real-time notifications and updates can keep customers informed about their rental, ensuring a smoother and stress-free experience.

Contactless check-in and check-out

Similar to the aforementioned digital booking, contactless transactions became a standard in many industries and countries during the pandemic and many of us have gotten used to not only being completely cashless on a day-to-day basis but also utilising things like contactless deliveries. The rental industry is no different.

Many places have started offering customers to complete the check-in and check-out processes without physical contact with a rental employee. The use of mobile apps, QR codes, and digital forms allows renters to access their vehicles and sign necessary documents electronically, reducing the need for in-person interactions and paperwork. In order to enable this securely and efficiently, two of Scrive’s main product offerings play a significant role.

Digital identity verification

Scrive’s customers across all industries have their own use cases for digital identity verification and in the case of car rental, typically this takes the form of secure online platforms where customers can verify their identity documents, such as driver’s licence and passports. This process is not only efficient but helps rental companies comply with regulatory requirements and prevents fraudulent activities.

Electronic signatures

Finally, we have Scrive’s original core offering, electronic signatures. These play a crucial role in streamlining the rental process as they enable renters to digitally sign rental agreements, insurance documents and other contracts, making the process faster and more convenient both for the customer while signing and for the rental company when archiving or looking up older contracts.

These signatures are legally binding and can be securely stored for reference. Electronic signatures not only reduce paper waste but simplify the administrative tasks for rental companies.

Driven by a variety of technological advancements, the world of car rentals has taken steps towards a future that is simultaneously more secure and more customer friendly. We’ve seen digital identity verification and electronic signatures emerging as critical elements for our customers, streamlining the rental process and making it more secure and convenient.

What will be the next innovation to reshape the way we rent cars, making it easier and more enjoyable for travellers? Only time will tell.
